Wishing our big Teekay family around the world a happy and safe holiday season!
This past year has been a big one for us at Teekay. In April, we announced an agreement to sell our remaining interst in Teekay Offshore in line with our current strategy to simplify and focus on our core gas and tanker businesses. In November, we hosted our first Investor Day in five years with presentations from the Senior Leadership Teams of our three public companies about the current state of our business and our outlook for the future.
In line with tradition, we like to pause and reflect on some of the most memorable moments we had. While it’s not always easy, we know our work matters. We share a passion for success and high performance, supported by a strong belief that we can achieve more, TOGETHER.
We would like to take a moment to thank our employees, customers, investors and partners for all your hard work, support and contributions in 2019. We close the year – and the decade – with a reminder of how we made it through with #TeekaySpirit!
Without further ado… here are our top moments of 2019!
We celebrated safety. Safety always comes first.
The most important thing is to ensure that all our colleagues get home safely to their families. This takes commitment and dedication 24/7/365 to maintain a strong safety culture. Our safety stories are a direct result of what it means to live and breathe safety – every single day.
Our 2019 Safety stories:
We were named “Shipping Company of the Year”
We had the honor of recieving the “Shipping Company of the Year” Award at the International Seafarers’ Welfare awards. What made this even more specials was the fact that the shortlist nominees were evaluated by a panel of independent seafarers! This award speaks volumes about the seafarers who provide support to one another on a daily basis and the commitment from the ship teams to our seafarers.
We promoted responsible ship recycling
After decades of sailing the seas, at the end of their life, ships are recycled – the vessel is dismantled, and steel and other valuable materials are recycled. It is the most responsible way of disposing a vessel, since almost every part of the ship is reused. We have developed and adopted a stringent process for ship recycling that goes above and beyond the Hong Kong Convention, and by being directly involved on-the-ground we ensure this standard is met when recycling our vessels.
We welcomed the Sean Spirit into our ‘Legacy Class’
Our ‘Legacy Class’ vessels honor the key people who have driven Teekay’s success over our 45+ year history. We already have the Torben Spirit, named after our founder Torben Karlshoej. We also have the Axel Spirit, named after Torben’s brother and long-time Teekay Board member, Axel Karlshoej. And in January of this year, we welcomed Sean Spirit – a salute to Sean Day, Teekay’s Chairman Emeritus.
We exercised for a good cause
Colleagues around the globe broke a sweat for some great causes this past year… always with #TeekaySpirit of course!

- Manila Office Reducing Plastic One Kilometer at a Time
- Glasgow Office Climbing to New Heights 24 Peaks under 24 hours.
We launched the Teekay Stories podcast
We have great people at Teekay, doing great work and we want to share that work and those stories widely. Our blog and social media channels are full of photos and videos and short writes ups of all that good work… but we wanted to dig into the stories in more detail – with the people who make it all happen. And so… we have the Teekay Stories podcast was born: 20-30 minutes of insider Teekay delight.
