Funding will provide structured training and supervised sea time for 24 maritime trainees over three years, strengthening Australia’s sovereign maritime workforce.
Teekay Australia is pleased to announce it has been awarded a major grant under the Australian Government’s Maritime Skills and Training Initiative (MSTI), supporting the development of the next generation of Australian seafarers.
The grant will enable Teekay to provide structured training and supervised sea time for 24 maritime trainees over three years. The program will help new entrants gain the practical onboard experience required for international certification, while supporting national efforts to address maritime skills shortages and build a more resilient, future-ready workforce.
“Teekay is delighted to receive this grant, which extends our longstanding commitment to seafarer training and development in Australia,” said Scott Willey, Managing Director, Teekay Australia. “The MSTI funding will allow us to provide additional structured pathways and sea time for cadets and trainees across shipboard roles, directly supporting national objectives to address skills shortages and build a sustainable pipeline of Australian seafarers for the future.”
Teekay Australia currently supports a fleet of 15 vessels across commercial, defence and Commonwealth contracts. Through the MSTI program, trainees will gain varied operational exposure across Teekay’s diverse fleet, building practical experience across multiple shipboard environments and strengthening the competencies required for safe and effective maritime operations.
Teekay will place a strong emphasis on mentoring, structured learning and safety awareness as trainees complete the sea time required for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) certification. The program will support eligible pathways including Integrated Ratings and cadets across Deck, Engine and Electro-Technical Officer streams.
Teekay welcomes the opportunity to support new entrant training and contribute to the growth of Australia’s sovereign maritime workforce. With Teekay’s ongoing investment in workforce development, MSTI funding will enable broader participation, support a larger cohort of trainees and accelerate the development of Australia’s maritime skills pipeline.
Teekay Australia was established in 1997 and provides a comprehensive range of maritime services for commercial, defence and government customers. Core services include new vessel acquisition, ship management, crewing and operations, technical asset management, sustainment and engineering.
