This is our journey, our journey to becoming the world’s leading tanker brand.
Along the way we have been capturing the essence of what makes us the best while, at the same time, learning about our peers and their roles. We all have a unique story yet share the same sense of pride in our work. The One Tanker Team video series was introduced to better understand the way we do things in our company – the Teekay Way. Each video is a brief reflection of that work, highlighting a few individuals from our diverse team across various functions in the company. We hope you enjoy going through it, it will help you better understand who we are and how we do things here . . . Because that’s the Teekay Way!
Open Communication | Capt. Vinay Akolkar
“Years at sea and months and months away from your family certainly teach you the importance of communication”
Capt. Vinay Akolkar joined Teekay in 2007, and with 37 years of experience in shipping under his belt, he understands that being well connected with his crew is critical for a job well done. He is a man who doesn’t believe in shortcuts – things get done by the book, every time. That’s his key to success.
Global Thinking | Matthew Blake
“People do deals with who they trust”
With over 20 years at Teekay, Matthew has closed more deals than he can count. His contributions have been instrumental to the recent growth of Teekay Tankers. As he puts it, “my job is kind of a valve – sometimes we want to open the valve and add ships to the fleet and at other times we want to shut it off and take fixed rate cover instead.”
Learning by Leading | Marlon Molinar
“I’m the kind of person who finds ways to make every situation in life easy – no matter how challenging it is”
In his six years at Teekay, Marlon has been promoted three times – and credits his success to his commitment to continuous learning. His dedication did not go unnoticed, as Marlon advanced from General Purpose Trainee to Messman, then to Able Bodied Seaman and now as a Pumpman. Marlon sums up his entire experience at Teekay in just two words: life changing.
Working Together | Kevin Mackay
“My pride in leading Teekay Tankers is about working for the best”
Since joining the company in 2014, Kevin has put a great deal of energy into facilitating the culture of working together. Setting the direction of the company it is one of Kevin’s main priorities but most importantly, it is to ensure we work together as one team. “It is by working together that we can bring the best out of each other and can achieve great things.”
Real Conversations | Ray McNamara
“If we’re not going to be honest with each other, we will never be the best”
Ray heads up Teekay Tankers’ Ship Management team and is tasked to operate the best ships in the industry. No less than that. Since joining Teekay, Ray has been able to re-engage with our seafarers, supply spares needed for our ships to operate reliably and focus on our operational performance in many different aspects. Ray’s efforts have been instrumental in maintaining our ships to the highest standard.
Family at Sea | Ronaldo Gomez
“My job is to care and protect the health of the people. When I take care of them, they take care of me”
Ronaldo has been part of Teekay since 1995. He is constantly learning new dishes to serve and watching over what he calls his family, the seafarers onboard his ships. Ronaldo has spent more than half of his life conjuring up dietary delights that ensure his colleagues are well fed and have the fuel to perform in their jobs.
Long-Term Thinking | Stewart Andrade
“I want to look back and feel that I’ve helped build something sustainable, successful and the envy of the shipping industry”
Stewart has been part Teekay since 2002 and presently leads the Tanker team’s long-term strategic planning and business development. In 2015, he helped us double in size by leading the projects on a few large scale and significant transactions as we continue to build a sustainable tanker company for the long term. In simple terms, Stewart’s role is to make decisions that help guide the future of the company.
Personal Growth Opportunities | Ozlem Kir
“Personally I like change and that’s how I look at my career”
Ozlem has been part of Teekay since 2008 and is currently supporting the Business Development team. Throughout her journey at Teekay she has moved across numerous roles diving into different aspects of the Commercial group. She’s also had the opportunity to work in our offices in London, Vancouver, Houston and now in Singapore. The knowledge and experience she’s acquired over the years have made her an invaluable asset for the team.
World Class Service | Capt. Nick Durant
“The main reason we are there is to make sure the job is done safely”
After 46 years at sea, Mooring Master Nick Durant still cannot believe the life he’s got. He has the unique opportunity to handle different vessels every day and deliver a highly specialized service of putting ships together at sea during ship-to-ship oil transfers. He takes great pride in doings things right – and being one of about 400 mooring masters in the world qualified to carry out these types of operations.
