Building and Commissioning RAN’s Largest Ever Vessels

September 16, 2015

Last year Teekay Australia won the contract to assist the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) with the building and commissioning of the RAN’s two newest and largest ever vessels, HMAS CANBERRA and HMAS ADELAIDE. These two Large Helicopter Dock (LHD) Canberra Class vessels are designed to transport a battalion of troops with all their equipment and vehicles to a trouble spot, supported by helicopters and landing craft.

Commissioning of HMAS CANBERRA

HMAS CANBERRA was the first of two LHDs to be introduced into the Navy. On November 28, 2014, the Commissioning ceremony for HMAS CANBERRA took place at Garden Island in Sydney. The Governor General of Australia and Prime Minister of Australia were the guests of honor as Australia’s first Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) was welcomed into service in the RAN. The ship is expected to be used for diverse tasking such as humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and amphibious operations, bringing a significant increase in amphibious potential to the Australian Defence Force. HMAS CANBERRA is capable of embarking over 1,000 troops and associated cargo which can be landed ashore by helicopters or state of the art landing craft. Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett said that the commissioning was a step towards developing the future of the Navy. “HMAS CANBERRA is an exciting addition to the Royal Australian Navy. This very capable ship will serve the nation well for decades to come,” he said.

HMAS ADELAIDE on Sea Trials

The second LHD vessel, Nuship ADELAIDE, completed a series of sea trials this year with Teekay Australia crew performing command, navigation, manoeuver and engineering functions. All sea trails have been successfully completed and Teekay expect to provide the delivery crew late October 2015 where the vessel will be handed over to the RAN and commissioned HMAS ADELAIDE. HMAS ADELAIDE and HMAS CANBERRA, known as the Canberra Class Vessels, have a maximum speed is over 20 knots, with an economical range of 9,000 nautical miles. The Canberra class vessels are 230.82 metres long overall, with a maximum beam of 32 metres, and a maximum draught of 7.08 metres and at full load, displace 27,500 tonnes.
