Story #3 – Rohit Kapoor

“My professional accomplishments? I can easily recall several successful technical, Safety, and Sustainability-related projects, but there’s really nothing I can say that does not involve global teams working together. You see, despite overseeing the whole of Ship Management, ashore and at sea, our success is never really tied to…just me or to any individual.

We have formidable colleagues at sea and in global offices with different nationalities and diverse backgrounds, and we are all united with the common goal of achieving Operational Excellence. To us, this means delivering safe, reliable, and industry leading performance in every rank or level, every ship or office, and from every individual. No exceptions.

This is what I have always admired about Teekay ever since I was a young officer from another company and up until I became the Master of one of our previous ships, the Godavari Spirit. I was always impressed by the quality of people and how we always took Safety and Operational Excellence seriously. It was a brand that everyone, including myself, wanted to be a part of.

Now that I have seen Teekay inside and out as I have journeyed from sea to shore through different lenses and scopes, all I can say is that our SPIRIT values, our people, our working environment, our company culture, or collective drive, our value for our people…all of these are nothing short of AMAZING. 

Of course, I had a hand in building it too!

I have done river cleanups and dance-a-thons, donned Halloween costumes and sung Christmas carols. I have run, walked, swung, stretched, paddled, batted, and bowled for different team activities, grew a beard and then changed it to a moustache, all for a good cause, in good fun, and always done together as a team.

We sometimes think that excellence ends with just doing the job right. I think excellence goes way beyond that. It’s in the way we shake someone’s hand, ready to have a real conversation. It’s in the way we show up in the office or onboard to make sure people feel welcome and are at ease. It’s how we can easily relate with diverse colleagues with our shared values and goals, making sure no one is left behind with training, mentoring, and feeling a sense of belonging.

When you realize how driven, focused, and fun the people in Teekay are, you just can’t help but be drawn in, as I easily was, many, many years ago.”

Story 2 – Katty Wu Wu

Holding a mug that says, “This calls for a new spreadsheet!”, I smile and look back to the memory of my younger self and all the expectations I had when I first joined Teekay as a financial analyst.

While I am comfortable with speaking in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, numbers speak more to me. But don’t let my passion for numbers fool you; I was also a part of the social committee when I first joined and have been an active mentor, mentee, and speaker in Teekay’s employee-development initiatives over the years. One example comes to mind.

In 2021, we rallied all the women in Teekay who are thriving and making a difference in their respective departments. I was honored to be a part of the group and shared my experience with our global teams. Being in a highly collaborative environment where everyone is committed to delivering quality work, I never once felt unheard or undervalued. In fact, my leaders and peers have constantly encouraged me to be open to challenge and to challenge the norm.

Because of this, I continue to be curious and because of our Teamwork, we continue to celebrate each other’s professional and personal milestones. From negotiations, strategy development, research, and evaluations, my team have always relied on each other to be curious, to collaborate, and to think outside the box.

I believe that’s the kind of mindset that helps a company – and an individual – grow. We are all part of a team, and every role is just as important. 

Looking back, I fully appreciate the culture that we have cultivated for decades. It always made me feel like I belong; like I am heard. Like I am home.

Throughout my voyage that has lasted for more than half a century—and still going strong!—I have had a diversified portfolio reaching at least four publicly traded companies, numerous joint ventures, amazing teams, and unforgettably fun moments, while weathering economic uncertainties, and even a pandemic!

As I was founded on leadership that is built on leaving a legacy beyond one’s tenure, my experienced teams across continents have always performed with their commitment to excellence and upholding my SPIRIT values, the values that bind us all.
