Two cadets from the Port Authority of NSW’s Sponsored Cadet Program recently sailed on board the Teekay manned and operated vessel, the MV Sycamore.
Teekay’s Australian Operations provides and supports vessel management, crewing services, and technical services to our customers, including the Commonwealth of Australia. Recently, as part of the Port Authority of NSW’s Sponsored Deck Cadet Program, two cadets did placements on board the Teekay-manned and operated vessel, the MV Sycamore.
Cadets, Sean and Amelia, were thankful to be given the opportunity to sail and learn onboard the MV Sycamore and learn from the ship’s dedicated training officer, develop their seafaring skills, and gain sea-time experience. During their cadetship, they were provided training and exercises in navigation which led to them handling the ship in Jervis Bay, as well as getting the chance to fly in a Blackhawk helicopter.
“It was a great working experience and on downtime had the chance to connect with the international crew: watching films, playing basketball on the deck and learning about them and their maritime careers.” – Cadet Sean
“Deck Cadet gave me the start in the industry I needed. Just being able to get on several types of vessels, like the SeaRoad ship, which is a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ship, the MV Sycamore, which lands helicopters with the navy, and a rig tender was so valuable.” – Cadet Amelia
