We are pleased to announce our Gas Fleet Operational Leadership Champion for Q2 2015, Ms. Susana Diaz Alvarez.

Second Officer Susana Diaz Alvarez

Ms. Susana Diaz Alvarez, Second Officer onboard Arctic Spirit, has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to safety and leading by example. She plans her routine drills with enthusiasm and dedication. She always thinks of ways on how to make the drills more involving for the officers and crew. Some of her “interesting safety schemes” includes:

Practical lessons on the Lockout/Tagout system using props and equipment which ensures better understanding of the subject for crew and officers.
Arranging games related to the ‘Three Blades of Leadership’ where ship staff are set in groups to arrange the factors under communication, teamwork, and support.
An immersion suit challenge which aims to ensure all personnel can put on their immersion suits within the designated time set in SOLAS.

Welfare-wise, she has been supportive to all onboard organizing recreation and teambuilding activities, taking the time to create certificates to be given to exceptional individuals. She continuously passes on her knowledge on safety to cadets and aspiring personnel. Susana is seen onboard as someone who is an independent person and people look up to her as a role model for safety. She exhibits her daily sunny disposition that the crew appreciates. She is open to recommendations and suggestions, and makes sure that the credit is given to where it is due.
