There’s Never a Shortage of Interesting Things We Can Learn From Each Other
What’s exciting about working in the maritime industry is how diverse it is; from the various shipping and offshore segments, to all the unique people and professions working at sea and onshore who keep everything running. There is always something new to learn.
But, how do you promote learning and education in your organization? That’s a question that was often discussed within Teekay, and one answer was to start teaching each other. After all, with such a wide variety of skills within our company, there’s never a shortage of interesting things we can learn from each other.
In July 2013 Teekay Vancouver started a “Knowledge Share” program with the goal of better sharing expertise and learning from each other. It started with a few ambitious volunteers to present, discuss, and sometimes debate topics that were relevant to Teekay and the maritime industry. Since then, we’ve held almost 30 sessions with more than 800 attendees in the Vancouver office alone. Some of the topics have included:
· Building the world’s first MEGI LNG carrier
· Why oil prices fell so much in late 2014
· The impact of sanctions on Russia’s Yamal project
· Why Teekay Tankers acquired vessels from Principal Maritime
· How to win in the competitive sale and purchase market
· And many more
The Knowledge Share program has since spread to other regions, and has become a way for staff to share what they’re working on when visiting other offices, which is important in a global organization like Teekay.
It’s a simple way of sharing and teaching each other new things, while learning more about the different aspects of our business and the maritime industry. A big thanks to everyone who has participated so far. Let’s keep sharing!
