“I wanted to expose myself to a new culture and work environment, seeing how people from different walks of life interact and work with one another. “
When the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore offered a 6-week overseas internship program, as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineering student, I immediately signed up.
With this opportunity, I soon found myself in the Teekay Singapore office first and onboard Vail Spirit in Shenzhen next to witness my first drydocking experience.
With Fleet Manager, Pardeep, I was exposed to the active life of our seafarers and this gave me a whole new perspective. I have a newfound respect for them and what they do. I can really sense the #TeekaySPIRIT in them!
Each day, I was exposed to the various jobs happening onboard. Among the class inspections, regular testing and repair works, I was able to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Even the massive size of the vessel continued to amaze me!
Not just limited to technical training, I also learned the importance of effective communication, adaptability, and professionalism in a dynamic and very busy work environment.
With gratitude to MPA and Teekay, I walk away with new technical skills, cultural understanding, personal growth and amazing photos.
Here are some of the photos I wish to share with you.
With lots of appreciation,
