Gas Operations Now Centrally Managed
Operating efficiently and continuing to provide customers with high levels of service are not mutually exclusive – in fact, both these priorities rank high for Teekay. A recent change to how the company manages its gas fleet demonstrates how decisions can be made keeping both these considerations top of mind. “The continuous improvement culture we have at Teekay requires that we examine all aspects of our business with a view to driving permanent and sustainable efficiencies,” commented David N. Penny, Vice President, Gas Fleet Operations. The Madrid Spirit, one of 15 LNG vessels managed out of Teekay’s Glasgow office. To that end, following a similar model to Teekay’s shuttle fleet, (as reported in the previous issue of the Spirit Online), the company’s gas fleet is now largely managed out of its Glasgow, Scotland office, in effect creating a gas “hub”. This means the bulk of the gas fleet’s technical and marine operations are all located under one roof. By centralizing operations in this way, the “hub” model allows Teekay to improve efficiency across functions and provides enhanced coordination between the management teams onshore and at sea. As a consequence, customers receive more consistent and improved service delivery. The transition of responsibilities from Madrid, where some gas operations were previously based, to Glasgow was completed in April. A customer interface team remains in Madrid, to ensure Teekay’s customer communications are managed locally as much as possible. The number of Teekay gas vessels being managed from its Glasgow office now sits at 16 (15 LNG plus one LPG) vessels, which includes joint venture vessels such as our Tangguh and RasGas fleets.
