Teekay’s shuttle tankers are built to transport crude oil and condensates safely and reliably from offshore oil field installations to onshore terminals and refineries. Our specialized crews and advanced onboard technology ensure exceptional operations in the harshest offshore conditions – providing an ideal alternative to pipelines. These high standards of operation are backed by substantial investments in technology. Teekay shuttle tankers are each equipped with specialized equipment – loading and dynamic positioning systems – for independent operation in all weather conditions. Shuttle tankers are highly specialized and significantly different than conventional tankers. Key Features of a Shuttle Tanker: Design: Shuttle tankers are designed with variable pitch propellers and side thrusters, higher cargo pumping capability, dynamic positioning systems, specific loading systems for loading cargo at offshore facilities, and reinforced hull design for fatigue prevention. We also accommodate a wide range of customer-specific equipment and systems. Stringent standards: Teekay’s shuttle tankers adhere to strict offshore industry standards and regulations. In addition to IMO regulations, countries having jurisdiction over North Sea areas impose regulatory requirements in connection with operations of shuttle tankers, including HSE in the UK and NPD in Norway. These regulatory requirements, together with additional requirements set by operators in North Sea fields, require further expenditures for sophisticated equipment, reporting and redundancy systems on the shuttle tankers, and for the training of seagoing staff. Specialized crew and staff: Teekay’s onboard crew and shore-based personnel have the skills, training and experience to safely handle the complexity of offshore loading operations. Training for our crews is specialized to include extensive simulator experience. This ensures we have the capability to safely manoeuvre around offshore installations, operate the loading and dynamic positioning systems, and comply with additional offshore regulations and practices. Our shuttle tanker dynamic positioning operators must also qualify for a dedicated dynamic positioning certificate. |
